Preparing for your Video Interview – Tips and Tricks

With video interviews quickly becoming the new ‘norm’ for the next while it is important that you are well prepared before your first video interview.

Video interviews can definitely be more demanding on candidates. Some candidates feel it can be harder to get your personality across to the interview team in comparison to meeting the team in person. First impressions are so important when it comes to interviews and having a video interview that runs smoothly without glitches will stand out more. It will demonstrate your professionalism and dedication to the role you are being interviewed for.

Below are some tips and tricks to help you prepare for that first video interview.

  • Check your surroundings
  • Ensure that you are in a quiet room where you will not be disturbed.
  • It is best to have a plain background that is not too busy or distracting.
  • Ensure there is enough light.
  • Always ensure you are seated during the interview.
  • Ensure there is no clutter or mess in the background.
  • Always ensure that your phone is on silent or turn it off.
  • Have your computer connected to power while doing the interview. You don’t want a power cut half way through.
  • Dress as you would for a face to face interview.
  • It is important that you dress the same as you would for a face to face interview. It shows the interview panel that you are taking the interview seriously. First impressions do definitely count. See here for tips on how to dress https://jwrecruitment.ie/interview-style-guide/
  • Check your technology.
  • It’s a good idea to do a test interview with a friend of family member to check your connection and technology.
  • Check log in details and make sure you have passwords before interview.
  • Ensure that your video profile is professional. E.g. it is not a good look to have a nickname as a profile with your picture of you on a night out. Your profile should be professional.
  • Body Language and Eye Contact is more important than ever.
  • Make sure to look at the camera in the monitor when talking, not the monitor. This can be difficult as we have a habit of looking at the person we are talking too.
  • Position yourself so that you are in the middle of the screen.
  • Speak slowly and clearly. When speaking on camera, there can sometimes be delays. It can be good to ask the team if they can hear you ok when starting the interview.
  • Sit up straight and smile. This is you time to demonstrate your personality.
  • Preparation is key!
  • Treat the interview with the same professionalism that you would with a face to face interview. Be logged in and ready to go at least 15 minutes before the interview is scheduled to start. That way if any last minute technology glitches happen, you will have time to fix them
